Healthier Maple Pecan Bran Muffins

I have been making Bran Muffins ever since I was a little girl and they are a real family favourite. The only thing is, the recipe calls for a whole cup of brown sugar which has always worried me a bit. I regularly cut it back to three-quarters of a cup without affecting the recipe, but even that is still a lot of sugar for a muffin that contains so many other healthy ingredients.

Italian Inspired Frozen Desserts from Nigellissima

One of my favourite chapters in Nigella Lawson’s new book Nigellissima is the one entitled “Sweet Things”, not least of all because it is full of recipes that look and taste incredibly impressive but take very little effort.

Gwyneth Paltrow's My Father's Daughter

Photo Alex Harris
Gwyneth Paltrow’s cookbook was published in the UK as ‘Notes from My Kitchen Table’, but I took pains to get hold of an American copy of the book as I loved the title ‘My Father’s Daughter’. Having lost my own Dad four years before, I really identified with the idea of writing something as a tribute to someone she loved so much. When I bought the book I did not know that I would later have a chance to meet Gwyneth in person.

Italian Breakfast Banana Bread

Nigella Lawson is definitely my all time favourite cookery writer. You can read her books like novels, and the recipes are virtually foolproof. I was so pleased when my copy of her new book Nigellissima arrived, and I’ve been thoroughly enjoying the television series that accompanies the book as well. There is also an amazing Nigellissima App with recipes, videos and more. It’s one of the best cookbook apps I have found so far.

Mild Honey Mustard Chicken

I love mustard in all it’s forms, from French’s mustard right on up to gourmet Dijon varieties infused with herbs. Unfortunately other members of my family do not share my passion and recipes with mustard actually in the title are rarely greeted with enthusiasm. When I do cook with mustard I need to either use it in very limited quantities or soften its bite with cream.

Orange Balsamic Chicken Marinade

There are millions of recipes for chicken out there which is sometimes rather more daunting than it is helpful. Not to mention the chicken thighs (cheaper, more tender, slightly more nutritious and some say tastier) versus chicken breasts (delicate, lighter tasting and nicer to look at) debate. In my house the latter is easily resolved as none of us like to eat meat off the bone and my son draws the line at dark meat. He is normally so unfussy about food I am happy to indulge him in this one small peccadillo. This is the young man who, as a child, used to beg me to buy brussels sprouts. I kid you not.

Step by Step Instructions for Pain de Gene

Pain de Gene translates to ‘almond cakes’ but these little cakes are absolutely delicious in any language.

Earlier this year I attended a Baking Trends workshop hosted by Dr Oetker where I watched demonstrations by celebrated pastry chef Claire Clark. Claire has worked with Dr Oetker once again, making free online video tutorials available to help everyone create beautiful baking easily in their own kitchens. There are tutorials available for Rose Petal Cookies, macaroons, eclairs and mini meringues as well as these beautiful Pain de Gene.
